Aptly named ‘The Nanny Dog’, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier’s popularity in the US is increasing dramatically. Their love for children and welcoming spirit to all who they meet is ensuring this breed a place in the heart’s of many. They are tenacious and very intelligent learning quickly with a deep desire to please their master. Loving the rough and tumble with the muscle to play hard yet with the gentleness to interact with the youngest of kids. Always up for the long walk in the
woods yet content to lie at your feet for hours just to be in your presence.
The Staffordshire Bull Terriers are known to have great strength for their size. They are stocky
and muscular, but are also active and agile. Colors include red, fawn, white, black or blue, or
any of these colors with white. Any shade of brindle or any shade of brindle with white.
The breed is the 5th most popular dog in the UK (its place of origin), and it is the only breed
to have the words 'totally reliable' in its breed standard. Due to careful breeding and
responsible owners their popularity in the USA is increasing dramatically.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of only two breeds from over 190 recognized by the UK
Kennel Club to have a mention of the breed's suitability with children.
Play Time
These dogs do everything full throttle: play, work and love. They are extremely
courageous and obedient, affectionate with a sense of humor. They are persistent and
active and will play tug of war with you ad infinitum. Some puppies can tend to chew a
great deal so make sure you provide them with plenty of chew toys.
Their powerful jaws will tear though vinyl toys to get to the squeaker in no time. This
can be dangerous if the dog swallows the plastic. Be sure to only give your Staffie
strong toys.
People Friendly - aka ‘The Nanny Dog’
They are very people friendly which leaves them rather useless as a guard dog. My dog is always happy to meet new people. The breeds reputation with children is second to none. Adored and adoring
within its own family circle. It is usually good with other pets in the
household, but may be combative with dogs outside the family,
especially dogs of his breed or related breeds.
I have found if you socialize them while a puppy and keep
them socialized they do very well with other animals. My dog will
play for hours with her dog friends without ever getting into any
aggressive state.
They are intelligent but stubborn at times but this is the appeal of this
'human' in doggy fur! The Staffordshire needs firm and consistent
training. They can be trained for agility and competitive obedience
and do very well because of their intelligence and tenacious spirit.
They love a challenge and variety.
