The Staffordshire Bull Terrier: Why They're Known as "The Nanny Dog"

When you hear the term "nanny dog," you might picture a gentle, patient caregiver for children. Surprisingly, this affectionate nickname is often attributed to one of the most misunderstood breeds in the world: the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffie). With their muscular build and bold appearance, Staffordshire Bull Terriers may not immediately seem like the ideal companion for kids. However, this breed has long been known for its loyalty, intelligence, and remarkable bond with families, earning them the endearing title of "The Nanny Dog.” My understanding is that they developed this deep affection for young children because of part of their darker past. When their owners would pull them out of the fighting ring, most likely badly injured, they would place them in the pram with their child and wheel them home. The pram and place beside the child became the place of safety and respite.

In their AKC breed description they score 100% on ‘Good with young children’ and ‘ Affectionate with Family’.  The AKC breed standard says this about them -

From the past history of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the modern dog draws its

character of indomitable courage, high intelligence, and tenacity. This, coupled with its affection

for its friends, and children in particular, its off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability, makes it
